The abundance of spatial data which has been acquired by Bakosurtanal, a survey and
mapping agency in Indonesia, needs to be effectively managed. A spatial data catalog
is essential for fast data searching and retrieval. A web-based system was already
developed using open source packages such as Chameleon, MapServer and MySQL. database
is managed by MySQL and the web GIS is produced by MapServer. This inexpensive
configuration helps reducing the total budget to develop the system. In this catalog,
the search of spatial data can be performed on the basis of map sheet, administrative
area and theme. The metadata is also stored along with the spatial data. Since the
system is in developed for web, it can be easily accessed by users. It is found that
this system is a feasible approach to manage and display the spatial data to users in
the internet.
