At previous OSG conferences in Ottawa (2004) and Minneapolis (2005), work on a
Web-based decision support tool called EduCal was presented as a work in progress.
The EduCal tool was developed using open source tools (primarily Mapserver,
PostgreSQL and PostGIS) entirely to evaluate education quality at the primary school
level in Peru using spatially-referenced education and population data. The EduCal
tool is about to be released in its second version to provide access to a large
repository of indicators of education quality for a multi-year database schema, as
well as indicators of social well-being. The software allows users to calculate
perspective-based indices of education quality and social-well being as well as
discover new spatial knowledge on education quality, using conventional
multi-dimensional data mining tools. Results can be viewed in map and tabular form
for individual schools, two levels of education administration areas and for
districts. EduCal 2 creates a more flexible environment for exploring data that are
more integrated with the mapping aspect of the tool than in the original version.
This demonstration will allow people to experiment with EduCal2 and see the results
of the application at work. |
